Climbing Mt Nyiro

Category: Samburu Survey | Date: Dec 26 2007 | By: admin

Climbing Mt Nyiro was the most physically challenging moment of my primates survey fieldwork in Samburu this year. The photos say it all…

It took us ten hours to get to Kurante where we picthed our tents before heading to Kosi Kosi (which is 2600 m above sea level) the next morning.

Finally the view

Beautiful pictures! Did you see any wildlife along your way? Lisa

Thanks Lisa and Wanda for your comments.
Mt Nyiro is and has been inhabited for by the Samburu for many decades (due to drought and during periods of insecurity) and many wildlife species disappeared. There are probably no large mammals remaining. However, baboons are plenty and we saw a few giants forest hog and red duikers and evidence of a leopard. The forest is surprisingly very rich in birdlife especially on the higher elevations.

more comprehensive details on my work in Mt Nyiro will be posted later in this blog.
